Challenge
Breaking Barriers: Solving License Management Pain Points
Outdoor enthusiasts faced challenges managing multiple paper-based licenses, leading to misplaced documents, delayed law enforcement checks, and difficulty purchasing licenses on the go.
Paper-Based Licenses:
Misplacing documents caused stress during checks.
Confusing User Flows:
Complex steps led to user frustration with purchases.
No Offline Access:
Users couldn’t retrieve licenses in remote areas.
Lack of Centralized Management:
Multiple licenses created organizational challenges.
Limited Regulation Access:
Users struggled to find relevant activity guidelines.
Inefficient Support:
High support call volumes indicated usability issues.
Research and Discovery
Empathy in Action: Researching User Needs
We conducted user surveys, interviews, and competitor analysis to uncover the challenges faced by outdoor enthusiasts. Personas like Sarah Thompson and Mike Johnson guided us in creating user-centered solutions.
How Personas Guided Decisions
We developed personas to better understand user needs and ensure inclusivity in design decisions. Sarah Thompson, a family camper, required stress-free license management to simplify outdoor planning for her family. Mike Johnson, a solo explorer, prioritized flexibility, speed, and offline access to support his spontaneous trips to remote locations. These personas guided the design process, ensuring the final solution addressed the diverse needs of both user groups.
How Might We

Ideation & Strategy
From Insights to Innovation: Ideation in Motion
Using brainstorming and mind-mapping techniques, we developed solutions focusing on license management, regulation clarity, and offline capabilities. The design prioritized accessibility and mobile usability.
Proposed Features

Design
Crafting Simplicity: A Mobile-First Solution
I focused on creating an intuitive mobile interface, combining simplicity with functionality. The visual design adhered to CPW’s brand, emphasizing clarity and usability for diverse outdoor conditions.
Wireframing and Prototyping
Using Figma, I iteratively developed:
Low-Fidelity Wireframes:
Streamlined workflows for license management and purchases.
Interactive Prototypes:
Tested user flows for seamless navigation and offline access.
Evaluation
Delivering Results: A User-Centric Transformation
The redesigned CPW app significantly enhanced user satisfaction by simplifying license management, enabling offline functionality, and providing clear regulations. These improvements reduced user stress and streamlined operations.
The Takeaway
This project underscored the value of user research in creating tailored solutions. I learned the importance of offline access for users in remote areas and the need for seamless navigation in mobile-first applications. Future iterations could integrate predictive analytics to enhance user planning.
